Winter can be nice

In fact, I like our cold, snowy winters. It's a time for just watching light and shadows in daytime, and not doing very much in the evenings. Gaining strength for the the intense spring.

Light

The sun doesn't rize very high in December. It stays up for about five hours now. Very often it's clowdy, like today when I'm writing this. When the sun shows it has beautiful effects on the landscape. Quite often you can see halos, like the one in my photo. Foxes keep their cubs under the old barn in summer. For a few moments the roof shines like a jewel in the fading light.

Wouldn't you like to go into the wood and see what's in there?

Art and thunder

Walking with Kasper today. A scary thing happened: thunder from a clear sky. I've heard it can happen but I've never heard thunder in the winter before. Anyway, before it made Kasper and me run home just in case a war had started, I took some photos.

A snow sculpture made by the plow tractor. A ditch. An ice weaft.

January pink

Walking the dog in January can be an aesthetic pleasure. I'm sorry I can't send you the lovely smell of cold and snow in the air, and the petrol (or whatever they use) from the snow mobile.
The sun is setting behind the trees surrounding our house.

Dramatic skye above the neighbors' houses.

Kasper's claws are far too long, have to do something about that. They don't wear down in the soft snow.

What's that on the field? Shall I bark at it?

It's a neighbor's father making the base for a skiing track with his snow mobile.

Our house looks like something from a postcard. Maybe I should print a postcard from that photo, the sign sticks for the plow tractor are nice. The track going left is the base for a skiing track. Hubby loves that!

Earlier in the day Kasper was out in a snow fall. See how good his isolation is? The snow took some time to melt.

The snow was welcome, it became so light, even if there won't be good light for photos for many months. This is The White Rose of Finland, Midsummer's Rose, Juhannusruusu.
Oxarv is an old Swedish pelargonium I like very much. She is pale in November.

The violets look frozen, but they are tough. We'll see if they survived when the snow has melted. It will melt. We usually get the winter snow around Christmas.
This is Hylotelephium spectabile, a plant I got from a customer at my work many years ago. This one's got rowan berries as a decoration. I take sprouts and plant them everywhere in the garden. It has many names in English, but I like the Swedish "kärleksört" and Finnish "rakkausyrtti", both mean "the flower of love".

It's snowing, old news. But it's beautiful, and a bit exciting too. Yesterday the road home looked like this (no, these are not our houses):
At my job the boys on the roof have throw down snow and their equipment. They had a snowthrower up there too, but it didn't work so well on the slanting tin roof.

But at home there is one who is very glad for the snow. Here comes Kasper at neckbreak speed (and now it's our house). I took this photo before more snow came down:
